NetBSD 5.1_RC2

May 28, 2010 posted by Soren Jacobsen

The second release candidate of NetBSD 5.1 is now available for download at:

http://ftp.NetBSD.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-5.1_RC2/

Those of you who prefer to build from source can continue to follow the netbsd-5 branch, but the netbsd-5-1-RC2 tag is available as well.

See src/doc/CHANGES-5.1 for the list of changes from RC1 to RC2.

Please help us test this and any upcoming release candidates as much as possible. Remember, any feedback is good feedback. We'd love to hear from you, whether you've got a complaint or a compliment.

Enjoy!

When I try to boot NetBSD 5.1_RC2, or RC1, or NetBSD 5.0.2 (i386), I get "Not a bootxx image" and the boot fails. I have multiple OSes including Linux and use LILO as boot manager, have also tried booting the NetBSD partition using grub4dos running under FreeDOS. DOSBOOT.COM, running under FreeDOS, starts to boot and hangs; last success with DOSBOOT.COM, or LILO, was with NetBSD 5.0.1. Only way I could boot was to make a small .iso image, using installboot and makefs with the generic kernel, and I was able to copy that and boot with grub4dos running under FreeDOS. That way I can boot into and run NetBSD. I wonder if others experience this same problem with NetBSD either i386 or other CPU architecture. I think I will send a send-pr too.

I tried 5.1_RC2 on my R5000/180 Challenge S and got a kernel panic just after the 'panel0' message (console capture below). The Challenge S has the same front panel buttons as the Indy but, AFAIK, doesn't have the audio circuitry so I'm guessing there might be a problem with the hardware probing. I'm going to try building a kernel without the panel option to see if that helps.
