pkgsrc, Solaris, and 5000 binary packages

Jonathan Perkin has posted an interesting blog entry entitled "apt-get" and 5,000 packages for Solaris10/x86 about using pkgsrc and the binary package manager pkgin on Solaris 10/x86. In pkgsrc, we can get conditioned to the fact that package management, in a coherent, well-controlled way; it's nice to see this gaining further traction in Solaris circles too.

Oh, and on a historical note - Solaris was the first non-NetBSD platform for pkgsrc. I wonder if anyone remembers when it was committed (without resorting to cvs logs)?

Great article. pkgsrc on Solaris with zfs just makes it. Thanks Alistair.

Why not adapt apt-get to NetBSD? The quality of NetBSD code should remain the same while the adapted apt-get would allow for better package management and also come to benefit from the coding quality of NetBSD. Nexenta has a deeper integration of apt-get around the OpenSolaris kernel and all that it offers.

For those interested, there is a good description of the packaging system. I'm sure some ideas could be adapted to the NetBSD philosophy. http://www.amazon.com/Debian-System-Concepts-Techniques/dp/1593270690/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1259775966&sr=8-1
