NetBSD 5.1_RC3

June 17, 2010 posted by Soren Jacobsen

The third (and hopefully final) release candidate of NetBSD 5.1 is now available for download at:

http://ftp.NetBSD.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-5.1_RC3/

Those of you who prefer to build from source can continue to follow the netbsd-5 branch, but the netbsd-5-1-RC3 tag is available as well.

See src/doc/CHANGES-5.1 for the list of changes from RC2 to RC3.

Please help us test this release candidate as much as possible. Remember, any feedback is good feedback. We'd love to hear from you, whether you've got a complaint or a compliment. That said, we hope your feedback is positive, as we would like this to be the final release candidate before 5.1.

Enjoy!

As somebody using both OpenBSD and NetBSD, I do not agree with the commenter above. Unless you care to compile everything from ports snapshots, OpenBSD is very insecure. The packages gets updated only when a new version of OpenBSD is released. And OpenBSD is lagging many features that is implemented in NetBSD. Still though, OpenBSD is also having its strong sides. In my opinion, pkg_add works better, as all dependencies are existing regardless of license. IMHO, both OpenBSD and NetBSD are the same secure, if handled right.

In response to our hero hiding out behind someone elses name (their posts deleted since their behaviour is both illegal and despicable, and no, I won't believe de Raadt is using a Mac in .tw to comment on blog.NetBSD.org): As very little research would show, pkgsrc has 4 quarterly releases a year.

Tried installing 5.1_RC3 and found the USB keyboard doesn't work in the installer. Didn't have this problem with -current (as of 6/30) or with 5.0.2. Hope this isn't going to be an issue in the 5.1 final.

Awesome work. Personally, NetBSD is probably my favorite BSD flavour. They are all really great though. Thanks for everyone's hard work with NetBSD. I'm downloading now and will help with testing it out!

I've been using RC1 and RC2 mostly, and delved into RC3 a little bit. My problem with 1.5 TB SATA hard drive support has been resolved, and I'm very pleased with the performance. I'm thinking lately about how I can entice more developers to get involved in NetBSD as I look forward to the official 5.1 release. Also, please don't feel pressured to release 5.1 -- whenever you developers decide that it's truly ready to be promoted beyond the RC stage works for me. Anyone who pressures you to release it ahead of time needs to understand that real quality requires patience.
